  • his playoff debut nearly perfect
Roy Halladay on Wednesday launched only the second no-hitter in a playoff game in history, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Reds 4-0 in Cincinnati, in the duel that began the series of first-round playoff series between the clubs.

Halladay, who pitched a perfect game only 29 of May, in Florida, dominated the Reds with a fastball and a slow curve precise and devastating, as it marked the debut of star pitcher in the playoffs.

Just yesterday, it was said that the only weak point Halladay, a pitcher with an impressive track record, was that he had never released in the playoffs. His debut was nearly perfect, literally.

The law allowed only one batter reach base is by giving passport to Jay Bruce with two outs in the fifth inning, a task that included eight strikeouts.

Don Larsen was the only pitcher who had thrown a no-hitter in the postseason. Achieved a perfect game by legendary New York Yankees in the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

On Friday, marks the 54 anniversary of that Larsen's pitching gem.

"It was surreal, really," said Halladay. "I just wanted to launch here in the playoffs. I wanted to go out and have a game like this. It's a dream come true."

In a season that had already been dubbed the "Year of the Pitcher," Halladay led the exploits of the pitchers to the playoffs.

The brilliant pitcher spent 12 seasons with Toronto and used to watch the playoffs on television only. A trade done before the campaign put him in Philadelphia, two-time defending National League.

The audience, which filled the bleachers, stood in the ninth inning and began chanting, "Come on, Doc." Halladay cheered loudly when he went to the mound to settle the last entry.

The balloon rose baseman Chase Utley, for the first out. Another Venezuelan, Miguel Cairo hit a high foul after, caught by third baseman Wilson Valdez.

act Halladay retired Brandon Phillips followed with a grounder that left the ball virtually motionless in front of the plate. The receiver Carlos Ruiz was quick to pick up the ball and threw to first for the out 27.

The pitcher broke his fist in the air, while Ruiz ran to the mound to congratulate him. Just like the catcher Yogi Berra did it with Larsen, Ruiz jumped into the arms of Halladay. But unlike Berra, Ruiz did not raise a battery mate with a bear hug.

"I think we understand each other very well from the beginning," said Halladay. "Carlos has been great all year. It helps me find my rhythm from the start and throw strikes."

For the Reds, Orlando Cabrera 3-0. Venezuelans Hernandez 3-0, 1-0 Cairo. Dominican Juan Francisco 1-0.

For the Phillies, the Panamanian Ruiz 1-0 with a run scored. The Dominican Wilson Valdez 3-1 with a run scored.
